Do we still pay credit card?
We were supposed to buy a house from my parents. My wife and I don’t have great credit and in the course of three years we were to rent the house and straighten out our credit so that we can then try and qualify for a mortage. This house was in a very bad state and needed alot of tlc. They agreed and opened up a credit line with home depot that allowed us to fix up the place. My wife was put down as an authorized user on the card. Nothing extravagant at all was done to the house, just true tlc. Well, due to family issues (jealousy from a sibling that was able to manipulate them into hating us, please trust me when I say that it’s chaotic and extreme how sad this person is and is willing to go to ruin people) they now want us out of the house but want us to still pay the card off and are threatening legal action.
I don’t think we’re obligated to pay the card since we’re not going to be living here (currently looking for a place) and we never got as far as owning the house. Everything charged on the card went to the house. They still own it, all of the credit cards purchases went solely to the house and we’re being kicked out and never bought it. But because my wife was the authorized user and made the purchases, are we legally obligated to pay it still?
Thank you so much. Everything I said is the truth. We’re emotionally drained and just feel like on the verge of a mental breakdown. We’re losing money as well, we put our own out of pocket earnings into the house as well.
I never knew my family member could be so evil just because their life is pathetic because they want everything for free and don’t know the true meaning of earning things.

You were never obligated to pay it. Only an account holder or a cosigner is obligated to pay a credit card bill. An authorized user is not obligated to pay.
Sorry to hear that things went south.
The debt is not tied to the house in any way. Its an unsecured debt, so whether or not you still live in the house, and who owns the house is completely irrelevant.
Your wife was an authorized user, NOT a joint account holder. That means she isn’t liable for a dime of the charge account, even if she was the one who physically made the purchases. Your wife never signed the account. She may have signed for individual purchases, but that is not the same as signing for liability for the whole account.
The bottom line is you don’t legally owe this debt. If Home Depot tried to sue you, the courts probably wouldn’t even take the case. On a practical side, if you don’t work out an agreement to help pay some of the debt, you may never be invited to thanksgiving dinner again. But then again, if your family is anything like my in-laws, that’s a good thing.
If everything is as you say then you need to know that there is nothing they can do legally, authorized users are not responsible for paying credit card debt period.
They can rant and rave and threaten all they want but when push comes to shove you and your Wife have nothing to worry about.
The good thing about this (if there is one) is that hopefully the payments that were made helped your Wife’s credit improve to the point that things will be a little easier for you two now.
Good luck family squabbles can be a real pain and the sad thing is when it’s all said and done no one really wins.
