I have just bought a new home (first one) and I was told I could go ahead and receive my tax credit. I would like to start doing home improvements. Like a new kitchen and finishing the basement.
So my question is: Can I already receive it or must I wait till tax time?
And: Where do I do it? At the IRS website?
Thanks!
Does the first time home buyer tax credit provide a refund if you dont use all of it? And if not does it carry forward into the next year if you dont use all of it?

I previously owned a house on a land contract (never a motgage holder) that was sold less than 3 years ago. I’m getting ready to purchase a new home before the end of the year. Will I still qualify for the tax credit even though it’s not my first house?
We bought our house on April 2, 2008. Is there any way that we can still get the 7500 dollar first time home buyer tax credit? The only information that I can find says that it has to purchased on or after April 9, 2008. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Do i half to file a amended return to get a first time home buyers tax credit, or can i just send in the form for first time home buyers?
As many people know, California is now offering a tax credit of ,000 paid over 3 years to Californians who purchase new homes in 2009. Nearly half the money allocated to this is already gone (the program started March 1st). I was thinking of buying a new home, however it wouldn’t be complete until July, when I think the money will be long gone. I would like to know how other people feel about this. Do people think they will allocate more money to this program?
I filed the ,000 tax credit for purchasing a new home on my ‘08 return. I recieved a cp05. It says that I will get my return or be contacted in the next 3 weeks. Did this happen to many people who filed for this? Is this the first step in being audited?
My mother claimed me on her 08 and 09 tax returns, I get a 1099 from my job. I Owe around 2,000-3,000 in back taxes plus I have a student loan that went into default (yes I have a lot going on). Will I qualify for the 1st time home buyer tax credit?
Me and my wife closed on a home in mid June. I applied for the 8k tax credit about a week or two later using Turbo Tax and mailed it in right away. Is there any way to check the status of the credit and see when I might receive it? I know they said 8-12 weeks, but a relative of ours said they had some problems with theirs and I heard that this has been happening. Any help would be good.
Bought home in September 2008, saw the possibility of the 00 tax credit (to be repaid over 15yrs correct?) but did not file for it. Can i still apply for it even if i have already filed 2008 taxes?
Is there a penalty for paying back the ,500 first time home buyers’ tax credit early? We don’t qualify for the one you don’t have to pay back.
My 2008 federal return was offset to pay off student loans..i then purchased a home and filed a 1040X ammended return to obtain the first time home buyers tax credit. Can this be offset as well?
I live with my fiance who owns a condo, and before we get married we want to buy a house together. My fiance has excellent credit, and i have good credit. Can i have her co-sign on a mortage (so that we can get a better interest rate) and still be able to recieve the 2009 First Time home owner tax credit? She does own her condo!
My grandmother lives in a Co-op in New York and I help her pay the maintenance, I used to live with her for several years until 2 years ago. Both of our names are on the co-op contract as share holder as well as on the Mortgage Interest Statement, Form 1098. I never took a mortgage or actually purchased any home. My question is, am I qualified for the 8000$ first time home buyer tax credit in case I buy an apartment in 2009?
I know that a regular tax return can be withheld but my question is if you are recieving the first time home buyers tax credit, can that be withheld, in addition to your regular return?
WOW
(most of) you people are so stupid and judgemental. You have no clue of my situation and yet you pass judgement.
YOU ARE THE ONES THAT SHOULD BE ASSHAMED OF YOURSELVES.
Is there a website where you can view the rules at all? i am wondering if you would need to spend the money only on home improvements, paying the mortgage, ins etc? Also, would you need to keep the reciepts for any and all purchases made with the tax credit?
My boyfriend and I want to purchase a home together. He has never owned, however I have in the past 3 years (tho not currently). Will he still be eligible to claim the first time home buyers tax credit, since we are not married and file our taxes separately? Or is he no longer eligible if my name is also on the mortgage as secondary?
Thank you.
I am getting a home from my brother, but not taking out a mortgage, it is paid off. Do I qualify for the tax credit? I have never owned a home before this.
I was wondering if I am elligable for the first time home buyer’s tax credit if I buy a multi-unit building (2 or 3 flat) and live in one unit while renting the other units out. It would still be the first real estate I’ve purchased.
My boyfriend is wanting to purchase a home from a builder friend of his through owner finance. There will be a written contract signed by an attorney and everything. He just wants to know if he will still quailfy for the First- Time Home Buyers Tax Credit for 2009 if he makes the purchase this way.
I am considering buying a foreclosed home from a local sheriff’s auction. This would be my first time buying a home. I am wondering if the first time home buyers tax credit would still apply to me even though I am buying a foreclosed home. Thanks for any help!
I was doing our taxes, on Turbo Tax, and it showed that with the information we had received we would be getting back a return. Then I filled out the info for the first time home buyer credit and it said that we qualify for the full 00. Should my return be AT LEAST 00 then? Considering we already had some of a return coming and we qualify for the full amount? The amount of our return after qualifying for the 00 went up just about 00. What am I missing?
yes, we definitley qualifty for the full 00….and before applying for that part, we already showed an estimated 00 being refunded. After we qualified, it showed a total of 00 being refunded….makes no sense to me.
Well…our house was definitely more that 30,000 or 60,000 bucks….and I think I read that you ahve to make 150,000 before it begins to phase out…we didn’t make that much.
My Girlfriend and I are planning on buying a house in May. We just heard about the first-time home buyer tax credit. We plan on getting the loan in both of our names. How do we file for the credit ? The price of the house around 110k. Would it better if one of us applied for the credit or both of us. Thanks for any help.
